This latest in the John Milton series is masterful as we see Milton at his best although not without serious challenges. A fortuitous meeting in an airport leads to an upgrade and thence to the gateway to a new adventure in Tokyo where Milton aptly navigates despite not understanding the language, customs or indeed players. He is dogged in his efforts to satisfy the dictates of the "Ninth Step" in dealing with being an alcoholic by helping a beautiful drug mule deal with the consequences of she and her husband's attempt to flee the despicable crime family. During this epic adventure, Milton deals with a personal crisis of maintaining his sobriety in the face of a major setback. The scene is handled with great sensitivity by Dawson. This very nuanced book includes the possibility of a lasting romance as well as very well described action and strategy. It concludes with a metamorphosis; what will the future hold?As always, in addition to highly recommending this excellent book I also highly recommend you dive into the series from the beginning and also read Dawson's other series as well. They are all magnificent and there is a delightful interweaving of characters between the series that adds a wonderful layer of intrigue. Author's of series often lose something in writing the series and get a little sloppy in the stories. Author Dawson made a few mistakes in this book I've not seen in any of his previous books in any of his series. There are a couple of mistakes that are egregious in the end of this book, one in fact, the other is a failure to understand a culture. The fact is about what was in the shotgun shells, they are called "birdshot" multiple times. The ballistic effects of "birdshot" were fairly accurate, but the last mention of the lead shot was of "buckshot" which would have destroyed the elevator and the passenger within. The cultural mistake was the disposal of a historical sword. We in the West don't comprehend the Japanese reverence of ancestors, and of historical weapons, especially swords. I can not imagine a mature Japanese man destroying such a weapon. I checked with Japanese friends to see if I was wrong, they said such destruction of a historical icon would be "unimaginable" . They suggested that giving it to the main museum in Tokyo which would brought great honor on the family donating the sword. Pulp fiction means the author can do whatever he chooses with his characters, these mistakes are beneath an author of Mark Dawson's body of work.
